Song Notes:

There used to be this gathering down in the city here in Chicago called Country Music Holiday.  It was this monthly get together of the hardcore country music artists in Chicago.  Ken Mottet from Big C and the Gin Palace Jesters hosted it.  Our bass player, Buddy, was a regular there, and our drummer, Theresa, played in the house band.

I only made it down there once because I usually ended up working weekends, but... it was a BLAST!  The night I was there (at the California Clipper) the owner ordered out for pizza for everyone and we ate and drank and played and listened to country music.

A few years later when I was working on this song, I borrowed the title for the chorus and it fit nicely.  I wrote it at a time when I was working as the "unskilled labor" on a construction crew for my father in law.  The song was really about being burnt and down and out and not really having any options.  Something that country has always been about

Lyrics:

Country Music Holiday

If I were a movie star
Today would've been the day
When I called down for my car
And made my getaway.

I'd tip the kid a Benjamin
For bringing my car around
I'd tell my agent to shove it
I'm headed out of town.

Yeah, but I'm sitting here in Tuscaloosa
Going out of my mind
With a sad lot of tired, hot middle managers
Bitchin' 'bout overtime.

What in the world do they want me to do,
Work all the shifts myself?
They can take what I got 'til five o'clock
Then they can all go straight to hell.

Chorus:

I'll take the long way home in my old car,
Try to find Grace tonight at the bar,
Where the music and the dancing hold in sway

You don't need much time or money,
Just a few good records to play
To take a country music holiday.

Verse 2:

I need to hear me some Willie Nelson
When I'm feelin' down,
When I want to kick some ass, ol' Johnny Cash,
Is somewhere hangin' around.

Steve Earle's there to free my spirit,
And when I need some rock and roll,
I pray to the ghost of Eddie Shaver,
"Have mercy on my soul"

Repeat Chorus Twice
